Liquidity on one side, an asset on the other
A bank holding accepted paper has capital tied up until maturity. Discounting it releases that capital and moves the exposure on — useful when a country limit is full, when the balance sheet is needed elsewhere, or simply when the funding cost has moved.
For the bank buying, this is one of the cleaner assets in trade: a defined amount, a defined date, and an obligor that is itself a bank. The credit decision is about the issuing bank and its jurisdiction, not about a corporate’s working capital.
What both sides need is price discovery. On the platform the paper is posted once with its acceptance and maturity, and banks bid the margin — sealed, so nobody learns where anyone else’s appetite sits.
The shape of the flow
Bank to bank: an accepted credit is a dated obligation of the issuing bank. Discounting it is buying that obligation early.
How it works on TradeOrigin
Post the paper, take bids, allocate.
Post the accepted paper
The credit, the acceptance, the maturity date, the currency and the amount being placed.
Banks bid the margin
Benchmark, margin and fees, quoted the same way by every bidder so the all-in is comparable.
Accept and transfer
The discount, value date and maturity are fixed on the record, and the exposure moves.
Collect at maturity
The discounting bank collects from the issuing bank on the due date, with the history intact.
Who it is for
Freeing up limits
A full country line should not stop you writing the next transaction for the same client.
Short-dated bank assets
Self-liquidating exposure to a bank on a known date, without originating the underlying trade yourself.
Managing the book
Placing and acquiring trade assets is a lever that works faster than raising a limit.
What you get
A real market price
Several banks pricing the same paper at once shows what the name is actually worth today.
Limit relief without losing the client
Move the exposure, keep the relationship that produced it.
Comparable all-in costs
Benchmark, margin and fees presented the same way by every bidder.
Discreet
Sealed bids keep your funding position and your appetite to yourself.
What the bank will ask for
Uploaded once, against the deal, and visible only to the counterparties on it.
Questions
Is this a risk transfer or a funding trade?
Both, and the bid says which is being priced. A funded discount moves cash and exposure; a participation without funding is a different product.
Who carries the issuing bank risk afterwards?
The discounting bank, to maturity. That is what it is pricing.
Can part of the paper be placed?
Yes. Post the amount you want to place and keep the balance.
